Saying I loved food is an understatement. For many years, food was my source of happiness. It was what I looked forward to after a day of work, it was what I looked forward to when going to social gatherings, it was what I did for fun, and it was my stress relief. My life revolved around cooking and trying different foods. In addition to this, I was very inactive due to some joint injuries.
With this combination of overeating and almost no activity, I spent many years at an unhealthy weight. At the age of 29 I discovered that my resting heart rate put me at a high risk for a stroke, and I immediately had to start blood pressure medication. This was the event that sprung me into action.
Knowing I had to stick to a strict diet, I initially wondered how I could be happy when I was losing the main thing that brought me pleasure. Regardless, I stuck with the diet and a workout regiment, while consulting with a physical therapists on my joint injuries.
In a short period of time, I realized food was nothing more than a hit of dopamine - a short term dose of pleasure. My baseline had normalized, and I started finding joy in every other area of life. I lost enough weight to normalize my blood pressure and get rid of my medications. Working on mobility and strength in my training completely healed my joint injuries.
Fast forward years later, and I've tried many different approaches to dieting and multiple training methods - HIIT, body building, powerlifting, olympic lifting, and endurance training to name a few. Regardless of the approach, I soon found out that the taking control of your nutrition and your training is the ultimate life changer. In addition to being physically fit, your mood, mental toughness, and energy reach levels I never thought possible.
Until this day, I'll have the occasional slip, or a vacation that throws me off my rhythm. Peaks and valleys are part of life, and it's critical to not become discouraged by small setbacks. It is instead critical to map long term progress. Knowing my starting point versus where I've ended up, I want to help those who are in the same scenario, but lack the proper support to reach their goals.
